Chain Cents - U.S. Coin Prices from our Auction Archive
Weighing twice as much as the Half Cent, Large Cents were minted from 1793 to 1857. The only lapse in production was in 1815, when copper supplies were limited. All Large Cents were coined at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1793 Flowing Hair Cent with the chain reverse was criticized as symbolic of slavery and was therefore soon replaced.
GreatCollections has sold 70 Chain Cents in the past 15 years, selling at prices from $1,532 to $171,563, in grades 1 to 50. Of these, 8 were approved by CAC.
