1857 Flying Eagle Cent - U.S. Coin Prices from our Auction Archive
Half Cents and Large Cents became increasingly unpopular while the cost of making and distributing these early copper coins had risen beyond the point of profitability. The Act of February 21, 1857, called for the production of the new copper-nickel Small Cent. Flying Eagle Cents were minted from 1856 (pattern issue) to 1858. The relatively high relief of the coin's design resulted in striking problems, and therefore was quickly replaced.
