Mintmarks on United States coinage tend to be uniform in size and shape. A simple explanation exists for this consistency: the same mintmark punch was often used from year to year. Unlike working dies, which often had to be retired from excessive use, mintmark punches were employed so infrequently that they could last over a decade potentially.
