Collected Over 35 years, Bingham Focused on Quality.
(Irvine, California) June 6, 2022 – Gregg Bingham, the retired NFL star, has decided to hang up his cleats once again. But this time, it’s by selling his prized collection of Silver Commemorative Half Dollars, expected to realize over $1 million in an auction by GreatCollections.
Bingham is a former NFL player for the Houston Oilers from 1973 to 1985. After retiring from the Oilers, he focused on collecting different series of coins, including Morgan Dollars, but commemoratives were always his favorite. He has been quoted as saying “I think toned coins are like art; I look at my collection as sort of a ‘Miss America’ contest”.
There are 144 coins in a complete collection, not counting specimens or proofs. Bingham’s collection includes a very rare specimen striking of the Grant with Star, and a breathtaking example of the 1892 Columbian Exposition, graded PCGS Proof-68 CAMEO, the finest known.
The collection is being sold over three weeks of auctions by GreatCollections, with bidding to end June 12th, June 19th and June 26th. The 159 coins range in value from about $1,000 up to over $100,000 each.
Bingham’s coins include some of the finest certified examples known of the popular series, and collectively represent a decades long quest to put together a commemorative collection with superior eye appeal and toning.
Silver Commemorative Half Dollars were issued in 1892 to 1953 for special events and anniversaries including the Hawaiian Sesqui, the California-Pacific International Exposition, and Centennial of the State of Illinois.
Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections said, “I remember seeing some of Gregg’s collection on display 20 years ago at one of the first ANA’s I attended - it blew me away, so it’s obviously an honor to now be auctioning the collection. His focus on eye appeal is evident with every coin, when you view the collection, it instantly shows how much time went into it.”
