This Week's GC Top Ten List - Bidding Ends Sunday, April 20th, 2025

Superb 1793 Wreath Cent, Mormon $5 Gold, Casascius Physical Bitcoin...

Welcome to this week's Top Ten List from GreatCollections, for our Sunday, April 20th auctions - our third day of auctions for April featuring over 5,000 certified coins and banknotes.

In early U.S. numismatics, the Wreath Cent is an important issue - issued in 1793, it is essential for type collections - and also admired by collectors as a standalone issue.  We have one of the few finest of the issue - graded PCGS MS-66 with CAC approval.  It was previously in the D. Brent Pogue collection and Dr. Sheldon personally cataloged it as part of the Anderson Dupont collection in the 1960s.

We present several Silver Ingots, including one from the Gairsoppa shipwreck, and the one featured below, which is dated 1949 from the New York Assay Office and weighing over 1000 oz.

In Territorial highlights, a nice $5 Mormon from 1849, graded NGC AU-58 - and in GSA Morgan Dollars, a superb 1881-CC, graded by CACG as MS-67 with their popular band-style grading.

And although these ten auctions might be perfect for what you're looking for, please be aware that this is only a tiny percentage of the whole auction.  Each week, GreatCollections auctions over 5,000 certified coins and banknotes!  So, if you don't see anything of interest below, be sure to browse our categories or view all upcoming auctions.

Happy collecting!

- Ian

Number 10:

(2022) Gold TiffCoin by Tiffany & Co. PCGS MS-64 (#17 of 499 with Original Packaging, Certificate & Folio)

A creative blend of luxury branding and crypto-inspired design, this 2022 TiffCoin was produced by Tiffany & Co. in 18k yellow gold, weighing 38.9 grams. Limited to 499 pieces and sold out within hours, it humorously nods to cryptocurrency by incorporating the Tiffany & Co. “T” with the familiar double-line element from the Bitcoin symbol. Numbered #17 and certified MS-64 by PCGS, it retains its original packaging, including the signature Tiffany blue jewelry box, folio, and hand-numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

Sold for $6,243.75  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (16 Bids)

Number 9:

1909-D Indian Gold Half Eagle PCGS MS-65 (CAC Green)

Housed in an older-generation PCGS holder, this 1909-D Half Eagle showcases the strong strike typical of Denver Mint incuse gold, enhanced by lustrous yellows, oranges, and subtle green hues. While the date is common in lower Mint State ranges, true Gem (MS-65) pieces are notably scarcer, making this CAC-approved coin a standout among survivors.

Sold for $11,819.25  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (54 Bids)

Number 8:

1884 Morgan Silver Dollar CACG Proof-66 CAMEO

Out of a modest mintage of only 875 Proofs, fewer than half survive today, and Cameo examples are even more elusive. This Premium Gem stands out with its razor-sharp strike, no notable distractions, and predominantly white surfaces that heighten the frosted devices’ contrast. Boasting excellent eye appeal, it is a prime selection for collectors of top-tier Proof Morgans.

Sold for $13,500.00  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (22 Bids)

Number 7:

1913-D Lincoln Cent PCGS MS-66+ RD (CAC Green)

Exhibiting rich red color that is notably elusive for this date, this PCGS MS-66+ RD example displays a crisp strike and radiant surfaces. As no 1913-D Lincoln Cent has been certified higher than MS-67 at PCGS, this coin’s grade places it among the small upper echelon of survivors. Approved by CAC, it is a standout choice for collectors seeking a high-end representative of this challenging issue.

Sold for $13,078.12  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (98 Bids)

Number 6:

1881-CC Morgan Silver Dollar GSA Treasure CACG MS-67 (GSA Holder) (With GSA Box and Numbered Certificate)

This blast-white 1881-CC Morgan Dollar, with a mintage of just 296,000 coins, has been certified MS-67 by CACG and ranks as the single finest known with them. It boasts frosty luster, a beautifully executed strike, and outstanding eye appeal. Housed in its original GSA holder, complete with the GSA box and numbered certificate, this fresh, original example stands out as a true highlight among GSA Carson City Morgan Dollars.

Sold for $10,463.62  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (39 Bids)

Number 5:

1849 Mormon Gold (Utah) $5 Mormon NGC AU-58

Estimated to have a mintage of 5,340 pieces, the 1849 Mormon Gold $5 is rarely seen in high-end grades, making this AU-58 exceptionally noteworthy. Struck in Great Salt Lake City from California gold, these coins bear the inscription “G.S.L.C.P.G.” (Great Salt Lake City Pure Gold), though assays revealed them to be underweight. With most survivors known in VF to EF, this near-About Uncirculated piece stands out among other high end examples of a historically intriguing private gold issue.

Sold for $51,751.12  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (59 Bids)

Number 4:

1911-D Indian Gold Eagle PCGS MS-63

Acknowledged as the lowest mintage issue of the entire Indian Eagle series, the 1911-D stands among the greatest rarities in 20th-century U.S. gold. This MS-63 coin offers vibrant color, a crisp strike, and nicely original surfaces, with only the minor abrasions expected at this grade level. Given how elusive the 1911-D is in any Mint State condition, this example provides an exceptional opportunity for the advanced collector.

Sold for $12,375.00  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (14 Bids)

Number 3:

2012 1 BTC Casascius Series Two Loaded Physical Bitcoin PCGS MS-67

Loaded with 1 BTC (valued at $84,944.00 at the time of writing), this highly coveted Casascius physical Bitcoin remains active and unredeemed. Its satiny luster and vibrant yellow-gold surfaces show virtually no blemishes, short of a minor fingerprint, placing it at the among some of the nicest of the PCGS population for 2012 1 BTC. Over 30% of all 2012 1 BTC coins have been peeled and redeemed, making this a unique and valuable collectors item.

Sold for $102,093.75  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (29 Bids)

Number 2:

1949-Dated Silver 1016oz New York Assay Office Ingot/Bar Uncertified (ASW = 1,015.44 oz.)

This massive 1,016oz silver ingot, poured in 1949 at the New York Assay Office, is one of only about a dozen in the 1,000oz class known today. It features a possibly unique hallmark with fineness and date in the outer ring, while the melt number 2387A and lot number 3 are placed on one short end; blue-gray toning envelops the sides and base, leaving much of the face bright. The Actual Silver Weight is 1,015.44 ounces.

Sold for $38,587.50  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (47 Bids)

And Number 1:

1793 Wreath Cent Vine and Bars Edge Sheldon 5 PCGS MS-66 BN (CAC Green) (Ex. Anderson Dupont, Reale & Pogue Collections)

A landmark coin from the earliest days of U.S. coinage, this Wreath Cent was described by Dr. William Sheldon (1954) as “superb, flawless... not a trace of wear.” It is the finest-known Sheldon-5 business strike at Mint State, second only to the Specimen-68 RD Atwater/Stellar example. This is a beautifully flawless, top-tier, eye appealing piece of American numismatic history.

Sold for $281,250.00  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (69 Bids)
