Rare 1878 Proof $20 Gold, Finest 1831 Quarter, Superb 1918 Lincoln Half Dollar...
Welcome to this week's Top Ten List from GreatCollections, for our Sunday, April 6th auctions - our first day of auctions for April featuring almost 6,000 certified coins and banknotes. Although there was no coin show this week for GreatCollections, Ian was out of the office visiting clients in New York, Connecticut and Idaho.
Atop our Top Ten list this week is a true trophy Proof Gold $20 piece from 1878, with a mintage of just 20 pieces. This is graded PCGS Proof-64 DCAM with CAC approval and has already attracted over 40 bids at the time of writing this.
We have the finest 1831 Capped Bust Quarter, graded CACG MS-67 from the Col. Green and Newman collections.
In our Silver Commemorative category, we have a very attractive 1918 Lincoln Half Dollar, graded PCGS MS-68+ with CAC approval.
We have a number of Key Dates - one special coin is the 1877 Indian Cent graded PCGS MS-65+ RD with CAC approval - an exceptional example of the key date Indian Cent.
The Friar Park Collection of U.S. coins continues this week with my personal favorite from this 7-figure collection - the 1795 Capped Bust Gold Eagle, rare in any grade - the Friar Park example is graded PCGS XF-45 with CAC approval.
And although these ten auctions might be perfect for what you're looking for, please be aware that this is only a tiny percentage of the whole auction. Each week, GreatCollections auctions over 5,000 certified coins and banknotes! So, if you don't see anything of interest below, be sure to browse our categories or view all upcoming auctions.
Happy collecting!

Number 10:
From the Mercanti-Signed Mint Engravers Collection of Platinum Eagles, this 2001 one-ounce $100 Platinum American Eagle (Statue of Liberty design) boasts a low mintage of just 14,070 pieces. Certified MS-70 by PCGS with a John Mercanti-signed Flag Label, this is a modern rarity.
Sold for $79,312.50 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (30 Bids)
Number 9:
Exhibiting exceptionally clean surfaces and no discernible marks, this early-generation NGC-holdered example flaunts warm red-orange toning on the obverse and subtle purple-blue hues on the reverse. Awarded the coveted gold CAC sticker, it stands as a top-tier commemorative, with eye appeal that far exceeds the assigned grade.
Sold for $932.62 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (33 Bids)
Number 8:
Struck to a modest mintage of just 16,788 coins—and with fewer than 180 graded at NGC—the 1848-C Quarter Eagle is elusive in all grades. This XF specimen provides sharper detail than typically seen for a date known for weak strikes, particularly on Liberty’s hair and forehead. With CAC approval, it stands out as an appealing representative of one of the most challenging Charlotte-minted quarter eagles.
Sold for $4,950.00 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (15 Bids)
Number 7:
Originally one of just 78 Proof Liberty Eagles minted in 1896—about half of which survive—this example hails from the famous Bass Collection and resides in an older-generation NGC holder. It displays crisp detail, strong cameo contrast, and remarkably pristine high points, offset by scattered hairlines in the fields that minimally affect its overall eye appeal. A rare opportunity to acquire a well-struck 19th-century Proof gold coin with historical pedigree.
Sold for $15,485.62 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (11 Bids)
Number 6:
Limited to 1,000 Proofs, the 1870 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar remains prized for its high quality minting, and Cameo examples are scarce, representing only about one-sixth of the surviving population. This NGC Proof-65+ (CAC) specimen has an exceptionally crisp strike and impressive cameo contrast, with some light haze seen on the fields of the reverse.
Sold for $14,625.00 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (7 Bids)
Number 5:
This key-date 1877 Indian Cent, graded MS-65+ RD by PCGS, boasts brilliant luster and a crisp strike, enhanced by subtle toning that enriches its visual appeal. Both CAC approval and the Eagle Eye sticker confirm its top-tier status among survivors of this famously scarce year.
Sold for $50,620.50 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (52 Bids)
Number 4:
Displayed as the default PCGS CoinFacts image, this 1918 Lincoln-Illinois Centennial Half Dollar reigns at the top of the population charts, showcasing a spectacular blend of purple, orange, and yellow toning across the obverse, along with subtle rainbow hues around the reverse rims. Graded MS-68+ and bearing a CAC sticker, it boasts a razor-sharp strike and phenomenal eye appeal, truly a crown jewel for commemorative collectors.
Sold for $51,750.00 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (59 Bids)
Number 3:
With only three BD-2, 13 Leaves examples ever graded at PCGS, this first-year “Small Eagle” type is exceedingly rare. Estimated mintage hovers around 5,100 pieces, yet far fewer survived. With even/smooth surfaces, a strong strike, and rich gold-yellow coloration, this PCGS XF-45 example boasts superb eye appeal and CAC approval, making it a top-tier rarity of early American gold coinage.
Sold for $81,562.50 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (9 Bids)
Number 2:
From the legendary “Col.” E.H.R. Green and Eric P. Newman collections, this coin ranks as the single finest known 1831 Small Letters (B-2) quarter. Graded MS-67 by CACG, it displays remarkable rainbow target toning with rich blues and purples, a flawless strike, and near-pristine surfaces. This coin is truly an infamous piece to advanced Capped Bust quarter collectors.
Sold for $79,875.00 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (59 Bids)
And Number 1:
With a tiny mintage of 20 pieces and just 8–10 survivors known, the 1878 Proof Double Eagle is already an iconic rarity. This particular Deep Cameo example—one of only two ever graded by PCGS, and none finer, presents richly hued gold coloration, housed in an older-generation holder. Its mirrorlike fields contrast sharply with frosty devices, while CAC approval underscores its exceptional quality. Notably, it is the first DCAM specimen to surface at auction in more than a decade and a half.
Sold for $290,812.50 (incl. Buyer's Fee) (64 Bids)
