This Week's GC Top Ten List - Bidding Ends Sunday, January 12th, 2025

Ian Russell on Mon, Jan 13, 2025 3:59:04 PM

Sole DCAM 1868 $20 Proof Gold, Soaring Eagle Gold Rarities, Anderson Red Seal Serial #1

Welcome to this week's Top Ten List from GreatCollections, for our Sunday, January 12th auctions - our second auction of 2025!  This multi-million dollar offering includes thousands of coins in all value ranges and series.

Atop the list this week is the 1868 Liberty Gold Double Eagle graded PCGS Proof-64+ DCAM with CAC approval.  It is formerly from the Bass Collection - and is the only DCAM ever graded at PCGS.  Considering how strong the Proof Gold Double Eagle market is, we expect spirited bidding and an all-time record set when this sells on Sunday.

From the Soaring Eagle Collection comes another nice selection of U.S. gold coins - one is the 1851 Gold $50 Augustus Humbert "Slug" graded NGC MS-63.

The 1795 Capped Bust Gold Half Eagle, the Large Eagle version is significantly more rare than the Small Eagle (although, we can say both are rare).  This PCGS AU-58 CAC example is very attractive.

In World Coins, check out the British 2021 Kilo Gold Coin - the 1000 Pound denomination and features the popular Britannia design.  Only five were minted.

The Coronado Collection of Red Seal Serial #1 National Banknotes continues this week with three special notes - one is the Anderson, South Carolina.

Please take a moment to enjoy our Top Ten list for our auctions this week.  And although these ten auctions might be perfect for what you're looking for, please be aware that this is only a tiny percentage of the whole auction.  Each week, GreatCollections auctions over 5,000 certified coins and banknotes!  So, if you don't see anything of interest below, be sure to browse our categories or view all upcoming auctions.

Happy collecting!

- Ian

Number 10:

Great Britain 2021 Gold £1,000 Britannia Kilo With Case of Issue NGC Proof-70 UC (AGW = 32.282 oz.)

With an actual gold weight of 32.28 ounces, from an incredibly small mintage of just five coins, this piece is identified as number four on the accompanying certificate of authenticity and brass plaque in the original Royal Mint presentation case. Graded Proof-70 Ultra Cameo by PCGS, this is a unique low-mintage coin.

Sold for $90,000.00  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (44 Bids)

Number 9:

Fr. 589 Anderson, South Carolina 1902 The Citizens National Bank $5 Red Seal Note Serial Number 1 Vernon / Treat PMG Choice Very Fine 35

From the Coronado Collection of Serial Number One Red Seal National Banknotes, this Anderson, South Carolina is one of the special highlights.

Sold for $40,500.00  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (36 Bids)

Number 8:

1866 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar Motto PCGS Proof-65 DCAM (CAC Green)

Housed in an older-generation PCGS holder and CAC-approved, this “With Motto” Proof Seated Dollar is one of just 725 struck. The vast majority of PCGS-certified specimens do not carry the Deep Cameo designation, yet the contrast here is unmistakable.

Sold for $24,018.75  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (36 Bids)

Number 7:

Mint Error 1977-D Kennedy Half Dollar on 40% Silver Planchet-177grs PCGS MS-62

A fascinating mint error, this 1977-D Kennedy Half Dollar was inadvertently struck on a 40% silver planchet—likely from leftover planchets from the previous year. Weighing in at 177 grains (approx. 11.46 grams), this piece retains the distinctive silver composition and luster one would expect from earlier silver issues.

Sold for $11,180.25  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (36 Bids)

Number 6:

Switzerland ND Palladium 10oz Credit Suisse Ingot/Bar Serial Number 0000001 Uncertified in Original Sealed Plastic (APdW = 9.99 oz.)

This Switzerland ND Palladium 10 oz Credit Suisse Ingot/Bar bears the remarkably low serial number 0000001—an extraordinary find for collectors and investors alike. Still sealed in its original plastic with the official Credit Suisse certificate, this bar remains in pristine, unhandled condition.

Sold for $17,437.50  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (37 Bids)

Number 5:

1863 Silver Three-Cent Piece NGC Proof-66 (CAC Green)

Housed in an older NGC holder and CAC-approved, this 1863 Silver Three-Cent Piece is graded Proof-66 by NGC—one of a select few in such a lofty category. Striking orange and green toning graces the obverse, while blue, green, and purple hues enliven the reverse rim.

Sold for $3,387.39  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (29 Bids)

Number 4:

Great Britain 1980 Gold £5 St. George KM-924 PCGS Proof-70 DCAM (AGW = 1.1771 Oz.)

The pinnacle of perfection, this stunningly superb 1980 Great Britain Gold £5 displays a captivating cameo effect from its frosted devices and mirrored fields. Only 25 have been graded Proof-70 by PCGS.

Sold for $10,126.12  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (48 Bids)

Number 3:

1795 Capped Bust Right Gold Half Eagle Large Eagle PCGS AU-58 (CAC Green)

The Large Eagle is undoubtedly the most coveted of the two versions of the 1795 Half Eagles. This CAC-approved example, housed in an older generation PCGS holder is rich and color and presents well with original mint luster.

Sold for $241,875.00  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (54 Bids)

Number 2:

1851 Gold $50 887 Reeded Augustus Humbert NGC MS-63

From the Soaring Eagle Collection of U.S. Coins, more often seen in circulating grades, this NGC "887" MS-63 Humbert $50 is one of the nicest graded examples in the market.

Sold for $160,312.50  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (26 Bids)

And Number 1:

1868 Liberty Gold Double Eagle PCGS Proof-64+ DCAM (CAC Green)

One of the rarest Proof Liberty double eagles, the 1868 issue had a mintage of just 25 coins. This remarkable survivor comes from the famed Harry Bass Collection—and is the sole Deep Cameo ever graded at PCGS. Its quality eclipses the assigned grade, featuring near-perfect high points, a razor-sharp strike, and deeply mirrored fields with appealing orange-gold hues. CAC approval confirms its outstanding eye appeal.

Sold for $421,875.00  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (38 Bids)
