This Week's GC Top Ten List - Bidding Ends Sunday, January 19th, 2025

Finest 1869 $20 Proof Gold Rarity, Leadville, Colorado $100 Red Seal Serial #1...

Welcome to this week's Top Ten List from GreatCollections, for our Sunday, January 19th auctions - our third auction of 2025!

The #1 highlight this week is the single finest proof 1869 Double Eagle - perhaps less than 10 known today from a tiny mintage.  We expect this to be our first 7-figure auction of 2025 when bidding ends on Sunday.

We are lucky to be offering more from the Schwenk Family Collection - this features the first part of their Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles by Date set.

In single highlights, a 1795 Gold Half Eagle graded NGC MS-61 will be popular, as well as the 2020-W V75 Privy Gold Eagle, one of only 1945 struck and graded PCGS Proof-70 DCAM.

The Lincoln Collection of Lincoln Cents includes some very rare errors including the 1943-S Struck on Silver Planchet, graded PCGS MS-63 from the Fred Weinberg Collection.

The Coronado Collection of Red Seal Serial #1 National Banknotes continues this week with three special notes - although every note in this collection is a highlight, this week includes the $100 Leadville, Colorado Red Seal #1 - one of only five serial #1 $100 Red Seals - and on such a popular state.

Please take a moment to enjoy our Top Ten list for our auctions this week.  And although these ten auctions might be perfect for what you're looking for, please be aware that this is only a tiny percentage of the whole auction.  Each week, GreatCollections auctions over 5,000 certified coins and banknotes!  So, if you don't see anything of interest below, be sure to browse our categories or view all upcoming auctions.

Happy collecting!

Number 3:

1921 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle PCGS MS-62

From the Schwenk Family Collection of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, the 1921 Saint-Gaudens double eagle ranks among the toughest dates of the 1920s, with nearly all its original mintage of 528,500 pieces melted under the 1933 Gold Act—only about 150 survivors are believed extant.

Sold for $115,312.50  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (50 Bids)

Graded PMG Choice Very Fine 35, Leadville’s rugged mining heritage makes any National Currency from this locale a prize, but a Serial Number 1 Red Seal $100 note carries special prestige among advanced collectors.

Sold for $180,562.50  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (56 Bids)
