This Week's GC Top Ten List - Bidding Ends Sunday, March 5th, 2023

Ian Russell on Wed, Mar 01, 2023 9:23:46 AM

Another Group from PNW Gold Eagle Collection, 1794 50c PCGS AU-58+, 1929 Saint, Half Disme in Rattler/CAC

Welcome to this week's Top Ten List from GreatCollections, for our Sunday, March 5th auctions.  This is our first day of auctions for March.  Difficult to believe that we're already into March this year!

One of the many highlights this week is the third part of the PNW Collection of Gold Eagles.  The multi-million dollar collection is being sold over four weeks - and includes over 170 different date/mint mark combinations.  All are being sold unreserved.  One of the many highlights is the 1883-O, which made the #1 spot this week - the single finest CAC approved of the date - which is a very rare date to begin with.

Other major highlights:  a 1929 Saint-Gaudens, a key date, and graded PCGS MS-65 and still residing in the old Series PCGS holder; a 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar, graded PCGS AU-58+ - so close to Mint State, and with all Mint State coins in known long-term collections, this is really the best example available to own.  Another classic U.S. rarity is the 1792 Half Disme - this week, we are offering a G-6 example in a Rattler holder with CAC approval.

In modern coins, the single finest 1977 Eisenhower Dollar, graded PCGS MS-68 with QA approval.  Bidding is already up to over $20,000 for this modern condition rarity.

And although these ten auctions might be perfect for what you're looking for, please be aware that this is only a tiny percentage of the whole auction.  Each week, GreatCollections auctions over 4,000 certified coins and banknotes!  So, if you don't see anything of interest below, be sure to browse our categories or view all upcoming auctions.

Happy collecting!

- Ian

This is a kilo of gold - a hefty coin that rarely appears on the market, due to its low mintage. Graded PCGS Proof-68. Minted by the Royal Mint.

Number 3:

1929 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle PCGS MS-65

A key date 1929 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, graded PCGS MS-65. Only a few hundred exist of this date in every grade, and gems like this coin do not appear on the market very often.

Number 2:

1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar PCGS AU-58+

While there are a few Mint State 1794 Half Dollars known, all are in major long-term collections to our knowledge. This is virtually Mint State and would be the prize of any early Half Dollar collection.

And Number 1:

1883-O Liberty Gold Eagle PCGS AU-58 CAC

This is week three of the PNW Collection, and this 1883-O is probably our favorite from the collection. The single finest with CAC approval, this is what we consider a "Ultra Key Date" - very rarely on the market in any grade.

Sold for $182,812.50  (incl. Buyer's Fee)  (56 Bids)
