Two Special Coins from 1860...

One of the most significant historical events in 1860 was Abraham Lincoln being elected as the 16th President of the United States, being the first Republican to hold office.  It is also the year of the first British Open Golf Championship.

This month, from different consignors, we are offering two special 1860 gold coins.  Both coins are included in our auctions ending on Sunday, April 29, 2012.

1860 Three-Dollar Gold Piece PCGS Proof-65 CAC (OGH)

Last traded in 1996, this rarity is one of the finest in existence.  PCGS has only graded this single coin as Proof-65 (there is a single PCGS Proof-65 Cameo), and this is the only CAC example.  Please note, this coin was graded by PCGS in an old green holder prior to PCGS recognizing the Cameo grade.

1860-D Five Dollar Gold Medium D PCGS MS-61

This fresh coin was graded for the first time only recently.  The owner acquired it 30-40 years ago, before PCGS was formed.  It’s a particularly nice Mint State example.
