How do I ship coins/paper money to GreatCollections?

We recommend shipping coins/paper money through the United States Postal Service via Registered Insured Mail or Priority Insured Mail. This is the safest way to transport coins. If you have coins worth more than $25,000 to sell, please contact us for special instructions. We will contact you the day your coins/paper money arrive.

Are my coins/paper money insured?

Yes, from the moment your coin(s)/banknote(s) arrive at GreatCollections, they are fully insured through our extensive policy with Berkley Asset Protection. A copy of our insurance certificate is available by request.

Do you charge listing fees?

We charge nominal listings fees based on the minimum bid set of between $3 and $10 (detailed on our consignment form). In the unlikely event your consignment does not sell, additional listing fees are charged after five listings (on the 6th, 11th, 16th etc. listing). If you do not want your coins/notes relisted, please contact us.

When can I expect payment?

Checks are mailed within 30 days of your coin(s)/note(s) selling. You can view your consignor results and payment schedule online at MyGC>Consignor Statements. GreatCollections can also give you an instant cash advance of up to half of their value (for certified coins). For more information about cash advances, please call Ian Russell at 1.800.44.COINS (+1.949.679.4180) or e-mail [email protected].

What happens if my coins/paper money don't sell?

Our sell-through rate is very high at GreatCollections. In the unlikely event your coins/banknotes do not sell, we will reoffer them in another auction. If they remain unsold, we will return them to you via insured mail (the cost is billed to your consignor account).

About GreatCollections

GreatCollections was founded by Ian Russell as an auction house to serve the rare coin, paper money and bullion community. Though there are many places to buy and sell coins and paper money, very few ensure that the transaction is conducted in a safe and secure manner while keeping both parties confidential.

GreatCollections offers collectors an extensive selection of certified coins and paper money ranging in price from $25 up to over $100,000. All coins/banknotes have been professionally listed and imaged by GreatCollections expert staff and most are certified by the leading third-party grading companies. Since GreatCollections has possession of all items being offered for sale, GreatCollections will ship your auction winnings and purchases to you securely and promptly. Sellers consign to GreatCollections to take advantage of our low commission rates, which work out in most cases to be cheaper than if they did all the work themselves.

From a young age, Ian was interested in collectibles and started working on weekends for a stamp dealer in Sydney, Australia at age 14. From there he learned about auctions at Stanley Gibbons Australia, personally handling many important sales including the Purcell Collection of Kangaroo and Map Series, the Mackey Collection of Australian States/Pacific Islands and the Morrison Hill China Collection. Ian also put together the company's first paper money auction featuring one of the finest New Zealand bank note collections ever formed.

In 2000, Ian was responsible for KISS The Auction, the multi-million dollar memorabilia auction conducted in June 2000 by a partnership of two major auction houses: Greg Manning Auctions and Butterfields. The auction set many records and is still regarded today as one of the most successful music memorabilia auctions in history.

From 2000 until 2010, Ian Russell held various positions at Spectrum Group International including President of Teletrade, Inc. and Chief Operating Officer of Bowers and Merena Auctions, LLC, two of the largest coin auction houses in North America.

Ian manages all day-to-day operations at GreatCollections and is always available to discuss the advantages of GreatCollections with prospective consignors and bidders. He personally manages and advises advanced collectors on acquisitions, as well as prepares valuations of numismatic property for collectors, dealers, estates, trusts, accountants and law firms.
